Personal Philosophy

As physicians, we spend years studying the science of medicine, but the art of medicine is in determining the best way to apply our knowledge and skills to care for each individual child.  In order to promote the growth and development of happy, healthy children, it is my privilege to partner with my patients' parents to provide the best medical care possible.  My goal is to educate and empower parents so that we, as a team, can make decisions based on up-to-date medical information and an understanding that every child, family, and situation is unique and requires an individualized approach.

Personal Biography

I grew up in North Carolina as the daughter of two educators (and the grandchild of two physicians - a pediatrician and a surgeon).  I can't remember a time when I didn't want to be around young children, and, from the age of about ten, I spent nearly every afternoon after school and most of the summers, babysitting.  From an early age, I aspired to be either a teacher or a doctor, and ultimately I realized that pediatrics was my calling.

I attended Wake Forest and met my husband on my very first day on campus (he swept me off my feet).  We were married the month after I graduated from college, and a few weeks later I started medical school at Wake Forest University Bowman Gray School of Medicine.  As a fourth year medical student, I spent a month working with the group here at Twin City Peds and knew that this was exactly the sort of practice where I hoped one day to work.  I then stayed in town to complete my residency training at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center (earning my "Triple Deac" status).  I was honored to serve an extra year as Chief Resident in Pediatrics, and later I was invited to join the General Pediatric faculty at the medical school.

As Chief Resident, I worked as a hospitalist, supervising care of children admitted to Brenner Children's Hospital, and in our outpatient clinics as well as the newborn nursery at Forsyth Medical Center. 

During my time on faculty at Wake Forest, I pursued my interests in asthma and food allergy management and the promotion of breastfeeding.  Additionally, I was in charge of the development of quality improvement projects in the General Pediatrics Department.  Serving on faculty had been an extraordinary experience, and I loved the opportunity to teach residents and medical students.  However, as a faculty member, I was in a supervisory role and did not have my own patients.  Over time I realized that, for me, the appeal of medicine has always been about the continuity of care and developing relationships with patients and their families.  In my heart, I knew that I needed to transition to private practice, so I was thrilled when the opportunity to join Twin City Pediatrics arose allowing me to form long lasting relationships with families, partnering with parents to provide comprehensive care for their children.

At home, my husband and I are busy with our three young children.  Our sons, Henry and Wilson, and our daughter, Sarah Louise, teach me more about caring for children every day as we experience the joys and challenges of being parents.  There is never a dull moment with young children!
